1st-2nd of November, Matchmaking Conference in Kirkeness...

The Kirkenes Conference is a part of the ENPI Kolarctic project called Young Innovative Entrepreneurs. A project where the overall objective is to support economic and social development of the Barents region by facilitating innovative entrepreneurial initiatives by young people in order to contribute to the development of the employment and entrepreneurship in the region. The dissemination of project results to a wider public in the region will support the development of multilateral involvement of the regional actors and thus securing the support for the project activities and its sustainability
The conference gathered 77 participants from all four Barents countries. Most of them already running their own business or planning to do so within a short period of time. In the opening speech given by Rune Rafaelsen of the Norwegian Barents Secretary, he noted that there were a lot of aspiring female professionals present. Actually were more than half of the participants female. A mix not often seen in the male dominated Barents business sphere.
The conference was built around two main topics; human centered innovations through design thinking and pitching your ideas. Federico Lozano started the two day program by introducing the participants to the concept of design thinking, before bringing them through an exciting day consisting of three different sessions. Session 1:  Empathy & Need Finding, Session 2:  Ideation and Session 3:  Rapid Prototyping & Define. Through these three sessions participants learned how to produce rough, rapid prototypes, elicit useful feedback, and iterate.  We also explored prototyping for less-tangible services and processes through role-plays and storyboards.
Innovative products and services are not enough to ensure your company’s success. Everyone needs a simple and compelling way to explain what they do. It's the key to successfully prospecting networking events, chance meetings and parties for new business. But unfortunately the way most people explain themselves comes off self-indulgent and boring resulting in wasted conversations and fruitless encounters. Steinar Korsmo from Seed Forum taught the participants how to quickly and simply define their, profession, product, service, organization or event and its value proposition to their products to investors, customers and partners.
The conference results were astonishing. The participants answered that they increased entrepreneurial competence, increased business competence and increased innovative competence. They also reported that they extended their business network by participating in YIE.

Young Innovative Entrepreneurs showcased in the Barents Reunion

For the sixth year in a row Barents Reunion convention gathered influential people of the Barents area together on June 12th and 13th in Tornio, Finland. The topic for the 2013 convention was "Transforming trade barriers into boundless opportunities". The annual convention’s goal is to increase networking and cooperation among the people living in the Barents region.

This year as a part of Barents Reunion convent Young Innovative Entrepreneurs project organized a Youth Workshop for it's participants. YIE’s participants Denis Kreminskiy, Heidi Andreassen and Mattias Johansson got a chance to make an appearance also in the Barents Reunion convent’s general program.

The future of the Barents region was discussed

The workshop kicked off by brainstorming the challenges and opportunities of the Barents region. The idea was to think how we could turn the existing challenges into opportunities in the future.

Some of the most important discussion topics were growing the attraction of the Barents region so that the talented youth of the area would prefer staying here in the future and how to make the Barents region better known globally.

It was great to see that at the end of the first workshop session the list of opportunities of the Barents region became much longer than the list of challenges.

After brainstorming together the participants of the workshop divided into two groups to discuss different matters: people, resources, technology, infrastructure and globality.

YIE’s young entrepreneurs and students also got a remarkable chance to present the results of the Youth Workshop in the Barents Reunion convention.

The presentation raised up issues about the future and developing of the Barents region from the young people’s perspective. As a part of the presentation a new Facebook page, Connecting Barents, was launched. The page is meant for networking and cooperating
between the people of the Barents region.

The founder of Ikea and also Barents Reunion convent Ingvar Kamprad was so impressed of the presentations that he wanted to personally thank the youth of the Barents.

Double victory for YIE’s participant Yngve Bergheim

Barents Reunion convention always culminates in awarding the Barents Entrepreneur of the Year and the Barents Young Entrepreneur of the Year. The awards are given to entrepreneurs who during the year have carried out unique achievements in the Barents area and who inspire others.

The criteria for the winners are: currently live in the Barents region; set a good example in terms of values; be an ambassador for the region; display creativity beyond the ordinary; and actively work to increase cross-border cooperation within the region. For the Young Entrepreneur award the individual has to be under 35 years.

This year the winner of the Barents Young Entrepreneur of the Year was chosen by the YIE project and winner of the Barents Entrepreneur of the Year was chosen by Ingvar Kamprad. Both parties were very mutual because the winner of the both awards was Yngve Bergheim from Ramsalt Lab (Tromsø, Norway)!

Morten Brugård and Saila Vaara celebrating with Yngve Bergheim.
Yngve Bergheim has been actively involved in YIE project from the beginning and has even found a business partner through the project from Murmansk, Russia (Denis Kreminskiy, Arctic Turn). He emphasizes that this kind of cooperation would have never been possible without the YIE project and the matchmaking events that has been organized for the participants.

Bergheim wanted to thank especially Ramsalt Lab's co-founder, Martin Lund, and Morten Brugård for choosing him to be a part of the YIE project. Of course he also thanks YIE project and all it's participants.

2nd matchmaking event in Murmansk

The second international matchmaking event of the Young InnovativeEntrepreneurs project took place in Murmansk (Russia) the weekend from 24th to 25th of May 2013. The objective of this event was to gather the entrepreneurs who are participating actively in the project within their respective countries. The main purpose is to matchmake them into cross-border cooperation with their companies, so in that way combat the migration of the young people from Barents region to the southern parts of the countries.

The conference was two days long, where entrepreneurs had the chance to visit Russian companies and develop their skills and knowledge of Russian companies and how to develop business in Murmansk region.

During the first day we could hear a success story from a Norwegian entrepreneur, Tage Sæther from Murmansktorgsnabservice JSC, who started trade fish between Norway and Russia. It was a useful and an interesting story which gave motivation to a lot of entrepreneurs, who listened to the experiences from this young Norwegian entrepreneur.  On the same day YIE entrepreneurs participated on a business simulation. They were separated by groups, so it was much easier to visit to the different places, where they developed and learned how to start a business in the Murmansk region. They also had the chance at the same time to visit Kola partneriat, a business fair which was held the same weekend than the matchmaking conference.

During the Friday afternoon, there were visiting to companies such Industrialpark SIVA, which is a business incubator, a consulting company NetSL, and also the designing studio of one of our Russian entrepreneurs, Alexandra Gapanovich, and the Youth House Mr. Pink (Murmansk branch of Barents YouthFilm Academy).

The objective of the second day of conference was to exchange the experiences from the first day. The entrepreneurs were separated again in work groups in order to discuss the barriers in cross-border business and business in general according to the information gained through the business simulation game and the visits to the companies.  After the work groups, the entrepreneurs had the time to discuss the result of the conference with everybody else and talk about the development of cross-border business.

On Saturday evening it was time for the farewell dinner, were most of the project partners and young entrepreneurs attended and shared a nice evening together.

Nowadays all the entrepreneurs are looking forward the next matchmaking conference which will be held in Kirkenes, Norway, during this autumn.

Success stories within YIE

Young Innovative Entrepreneurs project proudly presents it's first success story! Yngve W. Bergheim from Ramsalt Lab informed us that they launched a product of the YIE program:

Arctic Turn (Murmansk) and Ramsalt Lab (Tromsø), in cooperation with filmmaker Trine Hamran, have produced the web documentary site borderstories.no. “Media daily reports on the new optimism in the north, an optimism caused by the great resources of the region. I believe it is important we remind each other that the greatest resources of the north is the people living here, says Hamran.“

You can follow the web documentary on BarentsObserver.com and have more insight from here.

Participants in the project were Denis Kreminskiy, Евгений Пугачев, Martin Normann Lund, Yngve Bergheim, Erik Falster and Trine Hamran. Martin and Yngve from Ramsalt and Denis from Arctic Turn, first met at the YIE Business Matchmaking conference in Haparanda/Rovaniemi. Shortly thereafter, and with plans for collaboration in mind, five employees at Ramsalt travelled to Murmansk.

YIE and NoCry2 met again

Participants got a tour around the Science Centre Pilke.
Some of the YIE's Finnish participants gathered together for further regional networking at Science Centre Pilke in Rovaniemi. The event was organized in cooperation with NoCry2 project.

The event kicked off with a short presentation about today's entrepreneurial situation in Lapland by Antti Pietilä from Länsipohjan Yrittäjät. Participants also got a short introduction to InnoBarentsLab from Janne Konttaniemi (and Heli Huhanantti).

Project manager Heidi Alariesto from Rovaniemen Kehitys Oy was invited to the event to present their mentoring or kind of "godfather" activity where an experienced entrepreneur volunteers to advice young entrepreneurs. As mentoring programme is one of the Young Innovative Entrepreneurs project's aims too, collaboration between Rovaniemen Kehitys and YIE may be possible in the future for mutual benefit.

Participants also got a tour around the Science Centre Pilke with Pilke Host Leo Veikkolainen. The exhibition at the Science Centre teaches visitors about sustainable use of the northern forests and about the diverse range of products and commodities connected to the forests.

Science Centre Pilke teaches it's visitors, through all five of the human senses, about the sustainable use of northern forests. This was quite suitable theme/place for the YIE's meeting because after the tour around the Science Centre the participants got a chance to present their projects or companies using "Six senses" (scent, flavor, sensing, hearing, vision, intuition) created by iLme innorooms.

Eila Seppänen talked about NoCry 2 project accompanied by music, chocolate and NoCry2's business card that can be turned into a mobile phone holder. Project manager Saila Vaara's presentation of Young Innovative Entrepreneurs consisted for example of Angry Birds figure, chocolate money and syrup made of annual shoots of fir trees. Elina Stoor from iLme innorooms presented her business by taking the participants to a imaginary picnic on winter. First it was time for a little snack followed by a snowball fight and finally wrapping into a warm blanket. "Six senses" presentations were also heard from other participants of the event; Annett Pée from International Law Consulting Lapland Ltd., Hayden Lloyd from Hayden Lloyd Photography and Pia Aarnio from Design Vimma.

After the presentations the conversations and networking continued with dinner at restaurant Comico. There were a lot of great ideas, especially of where the next regional meeting could be. :)

Strengthening networks in Finland

(Photo: Nina Tuomainen)
The Finnish participants of Young Innovative Entrepreneurs had a get-together event on January 17th at Tervolatalo in Tervola.

The purpose was to meet, discuss and create stronger networks also regionally.

The meeting was organized together with two other projects; Northern Creative Youth 2 (NoCry2) and Creative Edge. All the participants of the event were from creative field so there was also a chance to expand networks internationally.

Nic Mepham from NoCry2 hosted the event and made everyone feel welcomed. The host of Tervolatalo, Matti Alatalo, also welcomed everyone to Tervola and shared some information of the place.

The highlight of the event was an inspirational panel where young entrepreneurs shared their stories how to succeed in creative industries. The panelists were Miikka Niemi from Flatlight Films, Mikko Manninen from Koivu Interactive, Elina Stoor from iLme innorooms and Marju Matsin from Marju Matsin Design.

The keywords of the panel were ”creativity”, ”networking” and ”social media”. For example Stoor described creativity as puzzle pieces, by fitting together two pieces that you’d normally think won’t fit together you can create something totally new. Niemi reminded that creativity can be found everywhere and it’s something that inspires yourself or others.

There was a division between the panelists when they were contemplating their businesses’ connections to social media. Matsin and Stoor didn’t really see the benefits of social media in their work, Manninen and Niemi on the other hand are strongly connected to different social media channels in their work.

Especially for Creative Edge’s young students of creative field the panel was a great way to get a wide range of knowledge and tips from the people who have made a living out of something they really love to do.

All and all, this kind of informal and relaxed get-together was well received by the YIE’s Finnish participants. It was a great way to build and maintain networks while waiting for the next Matchmaking event this year!

More photos of the get-together event can be found in Creative Edge's Facebook-page.
